Seaman’s Cafe

Sailors, often at sea for months at a time, would warm themselves during the cold nights with coffee enriched with mistrà (a typical Marche liquor made from aniseed) and rum, purchased at the various ports of call.

Seaman’s Coffee is a traditional product of San Benedetto culture, rooted in an ancient custom of local fishermen. This special coffee, born aboard boats some thirty to forty years ago, represents a combination of necessity and ingenuity. Sailors, often at sea for months at a time, would warm themselves during the cold nights with coffee enriched with mistrà (a typical Marche liquor made from aniseed) and rum, purchased at the various ports of call.

The main ingredients of Seaman’s Coffee are three: coffee, rum, and anise, with coffee predominating, making up 50 percent of the blend.

Traditionally consumed hot, today Seaman’s Coffee is also enjoyed cold, especially in summer, and used in different variations. The success of this product lies in its ability to bring a strong tradition and identity within such a simple ritual as coffee.
