The church, designed by Ascoli architect Ignazio Cantalamessa and erected beginning in 1870, served as a spiritual landmark for the old “Mandracchio” town center, surrounded by sailors’ houses along Laberinto Street. Inside, artistic treasures such as the icon of “Our Lady of the Rosary” by Andrea Tavernier, a 17th century “Escape to Egypt” and the “Holy Family” by Armando Marchegiani, a famous painter from San Benedetto, adorn the walls. Polychrome stained glass windows, the result of a 1988 restoration designed by Marcello Sgattoni, add a touch of color and light.
The neoclassical style of the church, enriched with brick details, is evident in the entrance portal to Matteotti Square, formerly known as the “Square of Arms.” Here towers the artistic fountain, created in 1870 to a design by Roman architect Vespignani, now enhanced by Paolo Annibali’s sculpture “The Dreamers,” a symbol of hope and rebirth. Along the way, traces of the city’s maritime history are encountered: a monumental anchor and Aldo Sergiacomi’s “La Retara” statue, a tribute to the woman who worked in fishing nets, testifying to the cultural and artistic richness of San Benedetto del Tronto.
